Ecuador is a land where the Earth refuses to sit still. Straddling the equator, it hosts over 48 volcanoes, 10 above 5,000 meters, and 27 still active across the mainland and the Galápagos Islands. From snow-capped giants in the Andes to volcanic islands in the Pacific, this country is a living testament to the planet’s raw power. Mountains and volcanoes aren’t just scenery here—they shape culture, history, and life itself.
But beyond statistics, Ecuador feels like a place shaped in real time. The ground itself seems temporary—built, destroyed, and rebuilt again by tectonic forces that never stop moving.
The Andes Mountains, which form the backbone of Ecuador, were created by the ongoing subduction of the Nazca Plate beneath the South American Plate. This tectonic collision continues to generate intense volcanic activity, earthquakes, and uplift, making the region one of the most geologically dynamic places on Earth. The so-called “Avenue of Volcanoes,” first described by Alexander von Humboldt, is a direct result of this process—a chain of towering stratovolcanoes lining the Andean corridor.
Rucu Pichincha: My First Encounter with the Andes
I had always dreamed of the Andes, but nothing really prepares you for the moment they stop being a distant horizon and start rising directly from the edge of a city street. That’s what makes Rucu Pichincha so striking—it doesn’t sit in isolation like a remote alpine peak. It emerges from the back of Quito itself, as if the city was simply built against something far older and far larger than human settlement.
Towering at 4,696 meters (15,407 feet), Rucu Pichincha became my first real confrontation with altitude, terrain, and scale. I remember looking up at it from Quito’s streets and struggling to comprehend how something so massive could feel so accessible. It looked close enough to walk to, yet distant enough to feel unreachable. That contradiction stayed with me all the way to the trailhead.
Geologically, Rucu Pichincha is only one part of a much larger volcanic system. It belongs to the Pichincha complex, which also includes the active Guagua Pichincha. The distinction between the two is subtle but important: Rucu (“old” in Quechua) is the weathered remains of an ancient volcanic edifice, while Guagua (“child”) is the younger, still active cone.
That naming alone reflects how deeply intertwined geology and indigenous understanding are in this region. These mountains are not just landforms—they are generations of a living volcanic system. The tension between them is constant but invisible. Guagua Pichincha last erupted in 1999, sending ash across Quito and briefly turning daylight into dusk. Yet just beside it, Rucu stands quiet and eroded, as if time itself has softened its edges. Together, they embody a central truth of the Andes: calm is never permanent, and silence does not mean safety.
Preparing for the Climb

Even before stepping onto the trail, I understood that Rucu Pichincha would not behave like an ordinary hike. The mountain begins its influence long before your boots touch volcanic ground.
Quito itself sits at 2,850 meters, which means you arrive at altitude before you ever begin to climb. That detail sounds small on paper, but in practice it changes everything. Even walking through the city feels slightly different, as if the air itself has been subtly adjusted.
In the days leading up to the climb, I moved slowly through the city and its surrounding hills, paying attention to how my body reacted. Effort came earlier than expected. Breathing required awareness rather than assumption. The idea of “warming up” began to feel less like preparation for exercise and more like negotiation with oxygen itself.
Gradually, I learned to slow everything down. There was no benefit in rushing, no reward in pushing harder. Hydration became constant rather than occasional, and eating shifted toward lighter, more frequent intake. Rest was no longer a passive state but part of the strategy itself.
Gear preparation reflected the same logic. The mountain is unpredictable in its weather, so layers mattered more than anything else. Cold wind, sudden sun, and rapid cloud cover could all appear within the same hour. Even simple items like gloves or snacks took on disproportionate importance at altitude, where small discomforts escalate quickly.
More than anything, preparation became psychological. I had to accept that discomfort would not be a signal to stop, but a condition to manage. That shift in mindset was more important than any physical training.
The Ascent
The Teleférico lifted me out of Quito and into a completely different environment. Within minutes, the dense urban texture of the city shrank into something almost abstract below. Streets became lines, buildings became blocks, and the Andes began to take over the entire field of vision.

At 4,050 meters, I stepped into air that felt immediately different. It was thinner, colder, and strangely quiet, as if sound itself had been slightly reduced. From that point onward, Rucu Pichincha no longer felt like part of the city’s backdrop. It felt like an independent landscape entirely.
The trail began gently, almost invitingly. For a short time, it gave the impression that the climb would be straightforward. That illusion disappeared quickly. The ground shifted from compact soil to loose volcanic sand, and each step began to behave unpredictably. Instead of advancing cleanly, I found myself slipping backward slightly with every push forward.
As the altitude increased, the terrain became less forgiving. The slope steepened without warning, and the rhythm of walking broke into constant micro-adjustments. It was no longer about covering distance efficiently but about maintaining balance against a surface that refused to stay stable.
Around 4,400 meters, the mountain began to make itself fully felt. A pressure formed behind the eyes, subtle at first, then steadily more persistent. Breathing no longer followed its usual rhythm. Each inhale felt slightly shorter, slightly more deliberate. The legs grew heavier, not from fatigue alone but from oxygen limitation itself.
The final section, across the Arenal slope, felt almost endless. The terrain turned into loose volcanic grit that shifted with every step, demanding constant correction. The air felt thin enough that even short pauses were necessary simply to reset breathing. Progress became a negotiation between effort and recovery, step by step, without any sense of guarantee.
At this stage, something changes mentally. Thought narrows. Planning disappears. Even awareness of distance fades. The entire experience collapses into immediacy: the next step, the next breath, the next moment of balance.
Standing on the Summit

The summit of Rucu Pichincha does not announce itself. There is no final marker or dramatic reveal. One moment the ground is still rising, and the next it simply stops.
The wind arrives first, sharp and unfiltered, cutting through every layer of clothing. Then the landscape opens. From above, the Andes no longer feel like separate mountains but like a continuous geological structure stretching across the country. Peaks rise through cloud layers with a clarity that is almost unreal. Cayambe, Antisana, Cotopaxi, and Iliniza Sur all stand in different directions, each exceeding 5,000 meters, each shaped by the same tectonic forces that built the entire range.
At that height, the concept of distance changes. Mountains that seemed remote from Quito now appear interconnected, part of a single system rather than isolated summits. The scale becomes difficult to process in ordinary terms. It is not just that the view is beautiful; it is that it exceeds familiar categories of perception. The silence is also different. It is not empty or quiet in a simple sense. It feels expanded, as if sound itself has more space to exist. Standing there, the summit feels less like a destination and more like a temporary interruption in a much larger geological story.
The Descent: When Altitude Struck

The climb down was supposed to be a relief. But as soon as I started descending, the altitude hit me hard. Head pounding, body trembling, and nausea setting in, every step became a battle. Oxygen felt like a scarce commodity, and my legs wobbled on the loose scree.
Painkillers and water offered little help. I staggered toward the Teleférico, the only way back to safer, oxygen-rich air. The descent felt endless. Each passing minute was a fight against my own body, a lesson in how quickly the Andes can humble even an experienced climber.
By the time I reached the base, I was exhausted, shaken, and painfully aware of how altitude sickness can strike even after summiting successfully. The taxi ride back to the hotel was a blur; my only focus was survival and recovery. That night, headaches, nausea, and trembling kept me awake. The mountains had reminded me of one inescapable truth: never underestimate the altitude.
How to Avoid Altitude Sickness
Altitude sickness is real, as I learned the hard way. Here’s what helped me cope and what I’d advise anyone climbing high Andean peaks:
Acclimate gradually: Spend a few days at moderate elevations.
Hydrate constantly: Thin air dehydrates faster than you realize.
Eat light, frequent meals: Heavy food can worsen symptoms.
Pace yourself: Slow, deliberate steps conserve oxygen.
Avoid alcohol and sedatives: Both increase risk.
Respect your limits: Turning back is smart, not failure.

The best time to climb Rucu Pichincha is during Ecuador’s dry seasons.

Lessons from Rucu Pichincha
Climbing Rucu Pichincha isn’t just physical—it’s a lesson in humility. Every step, every breath, every glance at the sweeping volcanic corridor reminded me of the Andes’ power. And it was my first real encounter with altitude sickness—a humbling reminder that these mountains demand respect.
The mountain also holds cultural significance for the people of Quito and the surrounding Andean communities. Its Quechua name—“Rucu,” meaning “old”—reflects indigenous understanding of the landscape long before modern geology explained it. For centuries, these mountains have been seen as living entities, often referred to as “Apus” or mountain spirits, believed to protect the land and its people. Even today, this deep cultural connection to the mountains remains part of Andean identity.
This was only the beginning. Ecuador’s volcanoes promise more challenges, more beauty, and more lessons that will stay with me long after I leave.
