The Allure of Grossglockner


Grossglockner is famous not only for its height but also for its glacial terrain and technical climbing routes. Unlike many alpine summits, it offers a mix of rock, ice, and snow climbing, providing a true alpine experience. Its peak can be

approached via the normal route from the Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe car park, traversing the Pasterze Glacier, Austria’s largest glacier. This route combines hiking, glacier crossing, and some moderate scrambling, rewarding climbers with panoramic views over the Austrian Alps, and on clear days, even Slovenia and Italy.


The Pasterze Glacier, once far larger, has been retreating significantly due to climate change, offering a visible reminder of how rapidly alpine environments are evolving. What was once a continuous ice field now reveals exposed rock and shifting crevasses, changing the nature of the climb year by year.

The mountain has a rich history of exploration. The first recorded ascent in 1800 by Franz-Xaver Salm-Reifferscheidt and his team marked the beginning of a tradition that would attract adventurers, mountaineers, and scientists alike. Since then, Grossglockner has become a symbol of Austrian alpine culture, drawing climbers from around the world.


Route Overview


The most popular ascent follows the normal route via Erzherzog Johann Hut (Adlersruhe) on the southeastern side of the mountain. Most climbers start from the Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe viewpoint at approximately 2,370 m and descend onto the Pasterze Glacier before climbing toward the hut at 3,454 m.

The route is usually completed over two days:

Day 1

  • Start at Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe.

  • Cross the lower glacier and ascend to Erzherzog Johann Hut.

  • Overnight at the hut to rest and acclimatize.

Day 2

  • Begin the summit push before sunrise, typically between 4:00 and 5:00 a.m.

  • Climb snow slopes and mixed terrain to the exposed summit ridge.

  • Cross the famous Glocknerleitl snow slope and the narrow summit crest before reaching the cross on the summit of Grossglockner (3,798 m).

  • Descend back to the hut and continue to the valley if conditions allow.

The full ascent involves approximately 1,400–1,500 meters of elevation gain and usually requires 8–12 hours of climbing time spread over two days.


Preparing for the Ascent


Climbing Grossglockner requires both preparation and respect for alpine conditions. While it’s not an extreme technical climb, the altitude, glaciers, and sudden weather changes can pose serious risks. Here are a few key considerations:

How to Get There


Grossglockner lies in the Austrian state of Carinthia, within Hohe Tauern National Park.


By car

  • Drive to the town of Heiligenblut am Grossglockner.

  • Follow the famous Grossglockner High Alpine Road to the Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe car park, the usual starting point for the normal route.

  • During summer, the scenic drive itself is considered one of the highlights of the region.


By public transport

  • Take a train to Lienz, Spittal an der Drau, or Zell am See.

  • From there, regional buses connect to Heiligenblut during the summer season.

  • Taxi transfers are available for the final section to Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe if public transport schedules are limited.


Best Season to Climb


The main climbing season runs from late June to early September, when huts are open and glacier conditions are generally more stable.

  • June: More snow remains on the route, which can make travel easier across broken glacier terrain but may require stronger snow and ice skills.

  • July and August: The most popular months, offering longer days and warmer temperatures, although afternoon thunderstorms become more common.

  • September: Often considered the best compromise, with stable weather, fewer climbers, and colder temperatures that improve snow conditions on the summit ridge.

Outside the summer season, winter ascents become significantly more serious undertakings involving avalanche hazards, shorter daylight hours, and more demanding alpine conditions.

  • Accessibility & Remoteness (4/10) Relatively accessible from developed Alpine infrastructure in Austria, with huts and established approach routes, but still a serious alpine environment once on the mountain.
