The first time Chimborazo came into view, I understood why it had once been called the “roof of the world.” Its massive, conical silhouette dominates the Andean horizon, dwarfing the towns below. Despite no longer being the tallest mountain by elevation above sea level, Chimborazo retains a unique claim: its summit is the farthest point from the center of the Earth, due to the equatorial bulge. In that sense, standing on Chimborazo is literally being closer to the sun than anywhere else on Earth.


Chimborazo is a massive, inactive stratovolcano formed by the same tectonic forces that built the Andes—specifically, the subduction of the Nazca Plate beneath the South American Plate. Over hundreds of thousands of years, repeated eruptions of lava, ash, and pyroclastic material built its shape. Although now considered inactive, Chimborazo’s last known eruptions occurred thousands of years ago, and its structure has since been heavily shaped by glacial erosion, leaving behind steep ridges and deeply carved valleys.

Alexander von Humboldt climbed it in 1802, documenting altitude sickness for the first time.   • Acclimatization: Spend at least 2–3 days above 3,500 meters before attempting the summit. Gradual exposure reduces the risk of altitude sickness.

  • Timing: Begin the ascent before midnight to reach exposed sections early, before sun-driven snowmelt triggers rockfalls and ice instability.

  • Gear: Mountaineering boots, crampons, helmet, ice axe, harness, rope, and layers for extreme cold are mandatory. Waterproof gloves and gaiters are essential.

  • Navigation: Follow a guide or well-established route. The glacier has hidden crevasses and penitentes that are difficult to spot alone.

  • Physical Preparation: Cardiovascular endurance, leg strength, and previous high-altitude experience are crucial. Consider climbing smaller Andean peaks as training.

  • Safety First: If weather conditions deteriorate or you feel unwell, turn back. Reaching the summit is not worth risking life or limb.

Best Time to Climb


Choosing the right season is one of the most important factors for a successful ascent of Chimborazo. Although the mountain can be climbed year-round, conditions are generally most stable during Ecuador's drier periods: June to August and December to February. These months typically offer clearer skies, lower precipitation, and firmer snow conditions on the glacier.


Even during the dry season, weather on Chimborazo can change rapidly. Strong winds, snowfall, and freezing temperatures are common at high altitude, and summit conditions may vary significantly from day to day. Most climbers begin their ascent around midnight, aiming to reach the upper slopes before sunrise when snow and ice are at their most stable.


The wetter months, particularly from March to May and October to November, often bring increased snowfall, reduced visibility, and more challenging glacier conditions. While successful ascents are still possible, climbers should expect greater objective hazards and a higher likelihood of weather-related delays.


For the best chance of reaching the summit safely, plan your climb during the dry season, allow extra days in your itinerary for changing weather, and always consult local guides for the latest mountain conditions.


How to Get There


Despite its imposing altitude, reaching the mountain is straightforward from the central highlands.


Starting Point: Riobamba:

Most climbers begin in Riobamba, a lively Andean city about 200 km south of Quito.

  • From Quito, take the Pan-American Highway (E35) south — roughly 4–5 hours by car or bus.

  • Riobamba offers hotels, gear rental shops, and local guiding agencies.

  • It’s the best place to acclimatize before heading to the mountain.


Trailhead Access:

From Riobamba, drive west toward Chimborazo National Park.

  • The road passes through San Juan and Mechahuasca, leading to the Carrel Refuge (4,850 m).

  • A 4×4 vehicle is recommended, especially in wet conditions.

  • The Whymper Refuge (5,000 m) lies a short hike above Carrel and serves as the usual base for summit attempts.


Guides & Permits:

Climbing Chimborazo requires a certified mountain guide — mandatory under Ecuadorian park regulations.
